You Can Always Ask Us to Slow Down
There’s no prize for being the fastest person to finish a dental appointment. You don’t get bonus points for sitting perfectly still when you need a break, pretending you understand something when you would like us to explain it again, or trying to tough it out when you’re uncomfortable. If you ever need a minute to breathe, want another explanation, or just want to take a small break, tell us.
You Get a Say in the Pace
You already know that we take your comfort seriously, but we also know it can be easy to forget something important once you’re in the chair. You can always ask us to slow down. You’re part of what is happening, and that means you have a voice throughout your appointment. If you need a break, tell us. If you want to know what we’re doing next, ask us. If you need another minute before we continue, take it.
If dental appointments make you anxious, that sense of control can matter even more. That is one reason we have always emphasized communication and moving at a pace that feels manageable for you.
You Don’t Have to Be “Good at the Dentist”
We would really like to retire this idea. Being a “good patient” doesn’t mean staying quiet when you’re nervous or uncomfortable. The truth is, telling us what you need helps us take better care of you.
Maybe you would like to know exactly what will happen before we begin, or you might prefer fewer details. Perhaps you need a quick break halfway through, or a particular part of dental treatment has always made you uneasy. Whatever it is, we want you to tell us.
Your experience matters, and communication gives us the opportunity to adapt to what helps you feel most comfortable. That emphasis on communication, control, and a judgment-free environment is central to how we approach dental anxiety.
Sometimes Slowing Down Helps You Move Forward
Slowing down can help you feel more comfortable with dental care over time. When you know what to expect, feel heard, and trust you can stop when you need to, an appointment can feel more predictable. That matters because our goal is not simply to help you get through one appointment. We want you to feel increasingly comfortable managing your oral health over the long term.
For patients who have experienced significant dental fear, we use a gradual behavioral approach that allows confidence to build at a manageable pace rather than relying solely on sedation to get through treatment.
Progress looks different for everyone. For one person, it might mean feeling relaxed enough to ask more questions. For someone else, it could mean needing fewer breaks than before. For another person, simply walking through our door may be a big accomplishment.
Keep Talking to Us
You know us, and hopefully by now you know there is very little you can say that will surprise us. If you’re nervous, if something feels uncomfortable, if you want us to explain something again, or if you simply need a moment, tell us.
You never need to apologize for asking us to slow down. Taking care of your smile should not come at the expense of feeling safe, heard, and in control of your experience.
If it is time for your next appointment, schedule one at our office on the Upper East Side. We look forward to seeing you, catching up, and continuing to care for you at a pace that works for you.
