Behavioral Approach To Treating Dental Fears And Phobias Versus Sedation
At NYC Smile Spa, we are passionate about helping our patients overcome their fears and phobias about receiving dental care. We know that there are patients who have avoided receiving care for many years due to their feelings. To help patients get the care they need, many dentists in the US have been trained to deal with fearful and phobic patients by providing various forms of sedation. We have a different and unique approach that Dr. Krochak explains further. Click above to watch the short video where Dr. Krochak explains his belief in choosing a behavioral approach over sedation.
Benefits of a Behavioral Approach to Overcoming Dental Fears
If you are a fearful or phobic dental patient, you may have received sedation or be familiar with it as a way to get the dental care you need. Common methods of sedation can include nitrous oxide, conscious sedation, or IV sedation. While these options can help you feel relaxed or fall asleep during treatment, the reality is that you aren’t overcoming your fear or phobia at all — they are just being masked by sedation. As Dr. Krochak explains in the video, patients will start treatment afraid, and they will end treatment afraid. We want to get to the root of the problem, so you will be able to receive dental care without any fear or phobia and definitely without needing sedation.
Our Unique Philosophy
Our goal at NYC Smile Spa is to not just get your teeth healthy, but to put you in a position where you can maintain that health by feeling comfortable receiving dental care when it is needed and not avoiding it because of your fear. Once fearful patients can overcome their phobia, they are able to receive routine cleanings at the appropriate time. Regular cleanings are important because we can catch problems in your mouth in the early stages, reducing your need for treatments and additional time in the office.
