Early Detection Saves Lives: What To Know About Mouth Cancer
With the holiday season fast approaching, your mind is probably focused on festivities and family gatherings. But there’s something else to consider this time of year: Mouth Cancer Awareness Month. While it’s easy to get wrapped up in the excitement of the season, November is the perfect time to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and treatment of mouth cancer. Although not as common as other cancers in the United States, understanding the risks and taking preventive steps can make all the difference. Read on to learn more.
What to Know About Mouth Cancer
Mouth cancer can affect the lips, cheeks, tongue, and gums. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as tooth loss, difficulty speaking and eating, and even facial deformities. Early detection is critical to prevent these issues, which is why we always check for signs of mouth cancer during your routine oral hygiene examinations and cleanings.
Inspect Your Mouth Between Appointments
Since many patients only visit us a couple of times a year, it’s important to stay mindful of your oral health between appointments. In addition to keeping up with regular brushing and flossing, make it a habit to inspect your mouth for any changes. You can do this by using your tongue to feel around, using a small mirror, or gently checking with your fingers. Be sure to check your teeth, gums, cheeks, tongue, and lips. Signs that may indicate mouth cancer include:
- Mouth ulcers that won’t heal
- Red or white patches on the tongue or inside the cheeks
- Persistent sores on the lips
- Changes in the color of the lips or tongue
As we mentioned, early detection is key to successful treatment, so it’s crucial to stay aware of your oral health and any changes you may notice. If you spot any of the issues listed above or if it’s been a while since your last oral hygiene exam, now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment. We also encourage you to schedule a visit if it’s been more than six months since your last cleaning and exam. If you’re located on the Upper East Side or in the surrounding area, contact our office today. We’d love to help you maintain your oral health through the holiday season and beyond!
