Replacing Missing Teeth: Is It Worthwhile?
In general, dentists spend a lot of time teaching patients how to prevent tooth loss but not nearly enough time educating them on what to do if that’s just not possible. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, teeth are lost or need to be removed. What are the consequences of this, and should patients opt to replace missing teeth? Let’s find out!
Smile Aesthetics & Health
For most patients, a major concern is the aesthetic impact of tooth loss. Even if the missing tooth is in the back, where it’s not noticeable, there will eventually be an impact on the patient’s appearance. That’s because, over time, a missing tooth will create additional problems that will not only threaten oral health but also change the appearance of the remaining teeth. Here’s how:
- Teeth are tethered to the jaw with ligaments that allow for movement. Therefore, when there is room for teeth to move, they will move. In other words, if a missing tooth is not replaced, the surrounding teeth will shift to fill the space. As this happens, it sets off a chain reaction of shifting and rotating teeth, eventually creating gaps, crowding, and a jagged-looking smile.
- The jawbone relies on the constant stimulation of teeth to stay healthy and strong. When there is no tooth to provide that signal, the jaw will begin to shrink in that area, making it more difficult for gum tissue to keep its grip. Gums will start to recede from the remaining teeth, exposing more tooth structure and creating a “long tooth” look.
- A shrinking jawbone will create an asymmetrical facial structure. The patient’s features will begin to droop. Cheeks will appear sunken in. Premature wrinkles will form around the mouth and on the cheeks, making the patient look older than they are.
Beyond the aesthetics, there are serious oral health consequences to missing teeth:
- When one or more teeth are missing, it’s harder to chew, which leads to uneven wear on the remaining teeth. This leaves teeth more prone to breaks, cracks, and decay.
- Missing teeth expose gum tissue that would usually be covered, leading to an increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
- As the remaining teeth shift and drift out of alignment, more will become loose until they eventually fall out or need to be extracted.
