Let’s Celebrate National Gum Care Month
At NYC Smile Spa, we are committed to your complete oral health. Often, patients believe that their dental care only involves the state of their teeth, when that can’t be further from the truth. When you visit our office for an oral hygiene examination and cleaning, we are not only cleaning the teeth and looking for tooth decay but also examining the health of your gums. September is National Gum Care Month, a time when we help people understand the importance of healthy gums. More than half of American adults experience gum disease at some point during their lifetime.
Check Your Gums
Since we see most of our patients only two or three times a year, it is important that they regularly check their gums and teeth at home for signs of problems. Even if you have excellent oral health, a problem can develop at any time. Gum disease is often a silent threat, not offering many warning signs, especially in the early stages. When inspecting your gums, it is important to look for problems such as red, swollen gums, recurring bad breath, receding gums, and even loose teeth.
How to Care for Your Gums
The best way to care for your gums is to ensure that you have an excellent oral hygiene routine. This includes brushing your teeth for a minimum of two minutes twice a day and using dental floss daily as well. If you are unsure of how to properly floss your teeth, we would love to help you during your next visit. It is important that you do not floss using rough and vigorous motions. This can cause trauma to your gums and bleeding.
If you are concerned about your gum health, we encourage you to contact our office, which is located on the Upper East Side, to schedule an appointment. We also recommend scheduling your next oral hygiene examination if it has been longer than six months since your last visit. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
